A Ten-Year Sentence Is State-Sanctioned Medical Torture of Joshua Wong

Beijing's brutal crackdown proves once again that authoritarian cages are designed to break the human body while global capital looks away.

When a corrupt court hands down a ten-year prison sentence to a 28-year-old dissident, it is not merely stripping away days on a calendar. It is ordering the deliberate, biological degradation of a human being. Joshua Wong, who has spent nearly his entire adult life being hunted and caged by Beijing, was just condemned to another decade behind bars under the draconian National Security Law. Let us stop treating political imprisonment as an abstract legal tragedy and call it what it truly is: a public health catastrophe engineered by state bureaucrats who view human flesh and blood as disposable trash.

I think often of an emergency room nurse I spoke with last winter who spent years treating patients inside a maximum-security prison. She described the slow, invisible violence of carceral medicine: the damp concrete that eats away at human lungs, the rancid, nutrient-stripped slop that ruins the gut, the complete denial of sunlight that destroys bone density, and the sensory deprivation that shatters the mind. The state rarely needs an executioner when it has a prison cell. It simply relies on structural medical neglect to grind down the organs of its enemies until their vital spark is permanently extinguished. That is the exact fate Chief Executive John Lee and his masters in Beijing have prescribed for Joshua Wong.

Wong was barely a teenager when he stepped into the streets, demanding nothing more radical than the right of regular people to have a say in their own lives and futures. For that unforgivable offense against unchecked power, he has been subjected to relentless surveillance, dragged through kangaroo courts, and locked in solitary confinement. Autocrats like Xi Jinping do not just fear protest signs; they fear the audacity of human vitality. They build their penal systems specifically to crush that vitality, using prison walls as blunt-force instruments to ensure that anyone who dares challenge their monopoly on power emerges broken, sick, and physically neutralized.

Yet the ruling class in Beijing does not operate in a vacuum. While Joshua Wong was being condemned to a decade of physical ruination, where were the titans of global industry? Where were the Western healthcare conglomerates, the pharmaceutical giants, and the private equity predators who love to plaster their corporate reports with hollow slogans about wellness, dignity, and human rights? They were busy kowtowing to the Chinese market, protecting their lucrative supply chains, and dining with the very party officials who signed Wong's transfer papers.

Look at the multinational CEOs who flock to economic summits in Asia, clinking champagne glasses while political dissidents rot in cells without basic medical care. Look at the drug manufacturers that will happily lobby Washington to crush universal healthcare at home while cutting backroom deals with overseas tyrants abroad to protect their intellectual property. The billionaire class has never cared about human life, whether it is an uninsured worker dying of rationing insulin in Ohio or a pro-democracy organizer coughing up blood in a Hong Kong detention center. In both cases, human bodies are treated as cheap, expendable inputs on a balance sheet.

Health is not a luxury item, and it is not merely the absence of disease. Health is freedom. You cannot have a healthy society when an authoritarian boot is pressed against the windpipe of anyone who speaks out. You cannot heal people when the state decides who gets fresh air, clean water, and access to a physician based entirely on political obedience. What is happening to Joshua Wong is an ongoing atrocity against human health, a cold-blooded demonstration of how institutions use carceral violence to discipline the working class and terrorize the young.

Ten years. A full decade stolen from a young man who committed no crime other than refusing to bow down before tyranny. When Wong’s physical and mental health inevitably deteriorates under the calculated cruelty of the Hong Kong penal apparatus, do not let the media dismiss it as an unfortunate side effect of legal proceedings. It is violence, plain and simple, executed with bureaucratic precision by autocrats and enabled by the sickening silence of corporate elites who value profit over human survival.
